Environment & Sustainability

Kingspan helps Australian homes and businesses harvest natural rainwater for everyday use, treatment of wastewater, and storage of energy effectively.

Planet Passionate 2030

Planet Passionate is Kingspan’s new 10-year global sustainability programme that aims to impact three major global issues: climate change, circularity, and protection of our natural world.

By setting ourselves challenging targets in the areas of energy, carbon, circularity, and water, we aim to make significant advances in the sustainability of both our business operations and our products.

Through Planet Passionate, we’re playing our part by driving energy and carbon out of our business operations and supply chain, as well as increasing our recycling of rainwater and waste, while also accelerating our participation in the circular economy.

How can we, and the construction industry, play our part?

As well as climate change, we are also facing an unprecedented threat to our natural world, with 1 million species at risk in a planet where 2 billion tonnes of waste is generated annually.

For those of us in the construction sector, it is particularly concerning that our industry is one of the biggest contributors to carbon emissions globally. Today, the construction and operation of buildings together account for 36% of global energy use and 39% of energy-related CO₂ emissions when upstream power generation is included. The construction industry is also responsible for ca. 30% of all waste to landfill globally.

Action, at scale, is urgently needed.

What Impacts do we intend to have with Planet Passionate?

Planet Passionate in our Operations

By being Planet Passionate in our operations we aim to:

  • Contribute to the world’s renewable energy mix.
  • Reduce carbon emissions (including in our value chain).
  • Accelerate the shift to zero emission cars and reduce air pollution.
  • Divert waste from landfill & keep materials in the economy.
  • Conserve precious water
  • Provide upcycling solutions for consumer plastic waste
  • Help clean our oceans

Planet Passionate via our Products

By being Planet Passionate our products will be:

  • manufactured using renewable energy and harvested rainwater
  • manufactured in zero waste facilities
  • packaged in recyclable materials
  • enabling lower whole-life-carbon in buildings
  • containing recycled materials and cycled production waste.

GreenFleet Australia

GreenFleet is a non-for-profit organisation and Australia’s first carbon offset provider. GreenFleets mission is to protect our climate through reforestation. Kingspan have been working with GreenFleet to offset our carbon emissions and contribute to their amazing projects.

GreenFleet have planted over 10 million trees across Australia and New Zealand. In 2021 GreenFleet planted over 530 hectares in Australian and New Zealand, that will sequester 358,178 tonnes of carbon over their lifetime. This is the equivalent of offsetting over 26,000 average Australian homes.

We will continue to support GreenFleet as part of our journey to a more sustainable future.

Our Commitment

Our Net Zero journey to date

In 2011, Kingspan committed globally to match 100% of our operational energy use through the use of renewable energy and the purchase of renewable energy certificates (to offset any remaining non-renewable energy use) by 2020.

We reached the successful conclusion of our 10-year Net Zero Energy programme in 2020 and further enhancing our sustainability focus, we then launched our ambitious, new 10 year Planet Passionate Programme.

We achieved this goal through our three-step strategy of ‘Save More, Generate More and Buy More’.

Save More

A key part of the “Save More” strategy has been employee awareness and training. Implementation of Energy Management Standard ISO 50001 in several of our manufacturing sites has also been effective in driving energy efficiency improvements and increased use of sub-metering has facilitated accurate targeting of energy saving opportunities.

Improving the energy efficiency of our operations remains the highest priority across the Group. A wide range of projects have been implemented including, but not limited to:

  • LED lighting installations
  • optimising daylight solutions including roof and wall lights
  • heat recover systems and compressed air system improvements
  • transitioning forklifts from LPG to renewable energy

Generate More

A key foundation of our “Generate More” strategy has been investing in on site generation. In 2018 5.9% of our total energy use was generated from renewable sources on our own manufacturing sites, and we have ambitious targets to grow this. The technologies presently in use include:

  • solar PV;
  • solar thermal;
  • biomass heat;
  • biomass CHP (electricity);
  • wind;
  • anaerobic digestion.

Buy More

The purchase of renewable energy from the grid is an important part of our strategy and enables us to support the development of a global renewable energy infrastructure.
