Detention Tanks – How Do They Work?

An On-site Stormwater Detention (OSD) Tank is a system designed to manage rainwater runoff, particularly when the local stormwater infrastructure struggles with high volumes. Unlike a retention tank, which stores water for future use, a detention tank temporarily holds rainwater and gradually releases it into the stormwater drains. This helps prevent flooding and reduces pressure on the drainage system.

Kingspan OSD tanks are supplied with easy to install detention kits (available in 100m and 150mm) which includes a double junction with inspection cap, detention tank signage and an orifice plate. The orifice plate is designed to restrict the flow of water being release back to the environment and can be easily cored onsite to the specified diameter. Our innovative High-flow filter is a popular choice to add to our OSD systems.

Detention vs. Retention Tanks

A detention tank manages water runoff, while a retention tank stores water for later use. In many cases, the two systems can be combined. For example, with a 5,000-litre tank, you might use the bottom 3,000 litres for retention—storing water for toilets or garden use—and reserve the top 2,000 litres for detention. This dual-purpose approach ensures you have water available for household needs while also managing stormwater effectively.

By combining detention and retention, with a Kingspan Water Tank you not only help reduce the load on local stormwater systems but also contribute to water conservation and sustainability efforts.
